Andre Lee Bassuet is a Korean American artist, designer and educator. She makes work dealing with memory and fleeting nature of human connections. She looks for unity between the human body and nature, merging qualities of both plants and humans.
Andre Lee Bassuet is currently teaching the Art of the Book at Brown University.
My creative practice explores feminine identity, collective memory and belonging. I re-use materials that have been discarded or forgotten and by mixing memory and materials, I create something of value from nothing. Working across disciplines of calligraphy, papermaking, cyanotypes, and embroidery, I use tactile materials to communicate our shared struggles and resilience and persistence in difficult times.
My background lies in the art of the book which can encompass printmaking, photography, storytelling, poetry, visual art, graphic design and publishing. It is a work of art that are meant to be touched and experienced. It can be a codex, an altered book, a sculpture or a wearable clothing. Artist books for me are democratic art forms; accessible, interactive and portable.
